BUSINESS EXERCISE

Today we had our first ever Business Exercise. I was paired up with Kirti Pathania(roll no.24) for the day. We left from college at 10:30 for an area called Kothrud .As our time started we all rushed out of the college gates towards our destination. As told before that the exercise was a way for us to no how resourceful we were, we tried not to take the easy way out by hiring an auto or using our bikes we instead used the available resources ie we decided to take a lift. Luckily we managed to get one as soon as we stepped out of the college. He dropped us at a place near E-Square from where we took another, then another and then another .We finally reached Null Stop that marked the beginning of our territory. The first company we approached was Bajaj as we both share a common interest in bikes, where we got the job but since they could not go against the HR policies they could not make any payments thus making it impossible for us to work there.

MY VERY FIRST JOB: The next company we approached was an advertising company called ASHA MEDIA AND ADVERTISING .When we pitched them to hire us it was a big no, however after convincing them for about half an hour they hired us. We worked with them for 2 and half hours we were both given different job profile. I was asked to leave with one of their representative for field work, something that I had never done before. We went to four different companies namely MITCON,CROMPTON GREAVES,VASUDHA DEVELOPERS AND BUILDERS etc where they had prior appointments. I was asked to observe the first three presentations and then give the fourth (figures and quotations to be given by him) however immediately after the first presentation I was asked to give the introduction for the second and third as well. I felt like I was doing a good job as they even asked me to join them for good. After we were done with the four companies it was already 2:30 pm and it was time for us to go back to the office and take a lunch break. I was then appreciated for the work I did and they gave me a letter of appreciation along with Rs 100. After the lunch break I had an option to continue with the same representative and go about covering the other companies scheduled for the day however I thought that I had had my little experience in the sales department and that I should go else where and make full use of the wonderful opportunity given to me.

MY SECOND JOB: I then proceeded to a showroom called Jaihind collections that sells garments for men. The first thing that the manager said was that he wasn’t interested in even listening to us as a lot of other students had come with a similar proposal and he was just not interested however we talked our way through (all thanks to the convincing skills of my partner for the day, Kirti) Convincing him was maybe more difficult than climbing Mount Everest but maybe that’s what gives us an edge over the others. Since it was an all men showroom it was difficult for them to decide the job profile for me. After a lot of discussion I was given a survey sheet and asked to take feedbacks from the customers. So here my job profile was that of a Market Researcher.

MY THIRD JOB:
After doing wee bit of sales and marketing and getting the basics of advertising we thought of doing something fun and something that we would probably never get to do unlike the other fields like sales and marketing etc where we can work anytime,we decided to work at a fuel station. This has by far been the most exciting day of my life. We were initially offered Rs 20 per hour which were the fixed wages for the others, which we did not decline but just gave him reasons why we should be paid Rs 30 more. He finally gave in and we settled at Rs 50 per hour but since it was just for experience sake we did not plan on doing it for over an hour. We then received our payments along with a letter of appreciation and we left for our last job.

MY LAST JOB: Like the saying goes save the best for the last our last job had it all, it was fun, it was innovative and it, for the first time made me feel that I wasn’t all that bad in business. We came up with the idea of self employment. We thought of doing our own small scale business ie buying flowers at cheaper price and selling it at a higher price. Since we were asked not to spend from our pocket we told the floweriest that if he gives us a bunch of 15 flowers we would sell them and give him Rs 5 per flower (which was his initial cost Price for us) and keep the rest as our profit. It was unbelievable that it took us less than 10 minutes to finish the bunch what’s more surprising is that in spite of the fact that we were selling those flowers for Rs 15 to 20 we were still doing better than the other florists who had priced the same flowers at Rs 5. We felt that this was our best task in the entire day.

I would like to thank Mr. Manohar Kamath and SIMS for this wonderful opportunity given to all of us which helped us explore our strengths and weakness’ and gave us a better idea about what we are expecting from MBA.
